14 Reasons Why You Aren’t Losing Weight

Are you having trouble losing weight? There are many reasons why this might be, but it’s likely not your fault! Here are 14 reasons why you might be having trouble losing weight:

1. You keep switching from diet to diet.

If you keep switching from one diet to the next; from one diet which tells you to eat no carbs, and the next diet which says to only drink juiced vegetables, it’s no wonder that your body keeps getting confused! When you change your dietary habits so drastically like this, your metabolism keeps having to switch between very different modes of operation, which is not an overnight process.

When large changes in your diet happen, your body tends to want to slow down the metabolism in order to keep things running smoothly, which can be counterproductive if you’re trying to lose weight.

2. You’re not at a caloric deficit.

One of the most important things you can do to ensure weight loss is to make sure that you are at a caloric deficit at the end of the day. This simply means that you are using more calories during the day than you ingest.

The main thing to keep in mind is that it doesn’t particularly matter how much you eat, as long as you’re keeping a deficit. This just means that if you want to eat a lot of high-calorie foods, you will probably need to exercise more than you normally would in order to burn more calories throughout the day.

3. You aren’t being active.

As said before, the most important thing for losing weight is to keep your body at a caloric deficit, but beyond this, living a completely sedentary lifestyle can also lead to many other health problems beyond simply not being able to lose weight. However, many people don’t have the time to exercise and be active while balancing a full time job, children, school and all the other responsibilities that everyone has to deal with in their daily lives.

But there is good news! The best solution to this problem is to find small ways to be more active in your daily life, such as biking to work or working at a standing desk for several 15-minute intervals throughout the day. And there are many more small tricks that you can do to activate your body and boost your metabolism! Individually, they are easy to implement. But if you compound several of them together, you will definitely start to see results!

If you want to learn more of these simple tricks you can use to remain active, I talk about them in my free book, “Starvation Mode: Escaping the Weight Loss Trap”.

4. You’re still drinking sugar.

This can be a major problem if you like to drink juice or soda a lot! As tasty as these drinks are, they are usually packed with sugar and contain almost no nutrients. I talk about this in my book - you shouldn’t drink your calories!

When your body doesn’t have to work very hard to break down the components of the juice, it just takes all of that sugar and most likely turns it into fat, unless you are being extremely active and burning a lot of calories!

5. You are gaining muscle.

This might only apply to you if you are working out regularly and building muscle, but sometimes the weight scale isn’t the best indicator of your health or how much fat you have lost.

For example, if you are lifting weights and building up muscle, you may be putting on new weight in your muscles at the same time that you are burning fat. If this is the case, you might actually gain weight, even though you are losing fat! This is why it’s necessary to look at other factors that can give you a good indicator of your overall health, not just weight.

6. You aren’t eating healthy foods.

Even though all the most fashionable diets are telling you to cut out one specific type of food from your diet, my experience is that these diets are either exaggerating the truth or outright lying to you. Cutting out one or more specific types of food from your diet is a popular style of diet because it’s easy to understand and explain to people, but the reality is that it’s simply a shortsighted way of looking at nutrition.

However, there is a bit of truth to some of the common sense around weight loss - if you are only eating junk food, it's going to be very difficult to lose weight. Your body needs food that has nutrients and minerals that it can use to give you energy and build your muscles!

And here’s an interesting point - many people think they are eating healthily but actually aren’t! They think that the food they are eating is nutritious and healthy because of the marketing and branding that has turned these foods into a branded “health food”.

A great example of this is fruit juice! Many people think of fruit juice as a healthy alternative to soda. But most fruit juice actually has just as much if not more sugar than soda does! A glass of fruit juice can have an incredibly high amount of calories, yet still be thought of as a “health food”.

The solution here is to identify which foods are actually healthy for you. For instance, nuts are both incredibly healthy and also make your stomach feel more full, which helps you to consume fewer calories overall.

If you would like to learn about more of these secretly healthy or unhealthy foods, I talk about a lot of them in my free book! Grab a copy below, or lets jump to the next point.

7. You are not aware of what you are eating.

If you aren’t aware of what you are eating, it’s very easy to eat too much or to snack on high-calorie, low-nutrient foods all day. You need to be aware of how much you're eating, and what types of food you are regularly consuming.

If this is difficult for you to do, I find it helpful to keep a food diary, writing down everything I eat each day. If you do this for at least two weeks, you will be able to see a much clearer picture of how much you’re eating, and just the simple act of keeping the diary will make you more mindful about the choices you are making.

But guess what! You’re in luck! I have something that can help you accomplish this in my free book!

8. You are not eating enough protein.

To be honest, you are probably not eating enough protein. Most people don’t eat enough protein in their daily diet. This is a shame, because your body actually needs protein in order to burn fat!

If you want to be losing weight, you should be getting 25 to 30 percent of your daily calories from protein. Protein helps your body burn fat, because it builds muscle! And muscle takes more energy for your body to maintain than fat does, even while it’s at rest. Building up even a small amount of muscle can be extremely helpful when trying to lose weight.

9. Your metabolism is low.

I’ve talked about this in a few of the points above, but I’d like to say it officially: one of the main reasons you might not be losing weight is that your metabolism is in the basement. For one reason or another, your body has slowed down its metabolism to try to hang onto your excess body fat as hard as it can! And if you don’t learn how to boost your metabolism, you probably won’t make very much progress.

But how does one boost their metabolism? Good news! There are several tricks you can use to accomplish this! And I talk about them in my free book, “Starvation Mode: Escaping the Weight Loss Trap”! Just click the link below to grab a copy!

10. You're drinking too much alcohol.

This is related to the point before - it’s easy to think of alcohol as being relatively low-impact when it comes to your weight, especially clear spirits which have lower calorie counts. But the fact is, alcohol can severely harm your weight loss efforts if you aren’t careful.

First, drinks like beer can actually have a large amount of calories in proportion to their size. And, as previously stated, you shouldn’t be drinking your calories.

Secondly, one of the main reasons that alcohol is harmful to your weight loss has to do with your liver. Your liver is one of the main organs in your body that breaks down and uses fat, so it’s very important your weight loss journey! Since alcohol gets absorbed into your bloodstream so quickly, it goes straight to your liver. And since your liver perceives alcohol as a toxin, it prioritizes getting rid of the alcohol in your blood first, before it breaks down fat or sugar. So if you are drinking every day and your metabolism is still super low, your liver doesn’t have enough time to break down your fat!

11. You’re not sleeping well.

If you aren’t getting enough sleep, you might find it more difficult to lose weight. The fact is, your body needs sleep in order to burn fat. While you are sleeping, your body is able to spend time burning excess fat, especially if you were at a caloric deficit during the day! Sleep is also the time when your body would repair your muscles after working out!

But if you don’t sleep for long enough, your body isn’t able to take advantage of your rest to burn fat and build muscle! So go to bed at a decent time and get enough sleep!

12. You’re eating too often.

Another possibility is that you are eating too often! The more often you eat, the more likely you are to consume more calories. So if you are snacking and eating meals at many times throughout the day, it’s more likely that you’ll eat more than you planned to.

Thankfully, there’s an easy solution to this problem! In my free book, “Starvation Mode: Escaping the Weight Loss Trap”, I have included an easy-to-use food diary that can help you track what you are eating. If you know exactly what you are putting into your body, it’s so much easier to not eat too much or too little!

14. You’re starving yourself.

Finally, one of the main reasons that you might not be losing weight is because you aren’t actually eating enough! If you starve yourself because you’re trying to lose weight, you’re actually forcing your body into “Starvation Mode” which means your body will slow down your metabolism and try to do everything it can to stop losing weight! This is a defense mechanism that our ancestors evolved back in the Stone Age to help us deal with periods of famine or food scarcity.

However, in our modern world, this is rarely a concern. Nowadays, this natural biological mechanism is just making us tired all the time and making it harder to lose weight! The problem is, most people don’t know how to lose weight without starving themselves. But don’t fall for this trap! There is a different way. Do you want to learn more? I wrote a book that can help!
